It is unusual for the Contemporary Art Society’s allocation of works to be made more than a few years after their completion. However, Kenneth Rowntree was lucky to claim this early Heron from the 1972 CAS selection. Here are the beginnings of Heron’s career-long obsession with arrangements of pure colour, though retaining some drawn figurative elements, reminiscent of Braque, which within a few years would disappear entirely.
