The foam suggests the head has been packed away, echoing how cultural institutions extract, archive and store artefacts that were once central to community and ritual. At the same time, Awuni describes the foam's sky-blue colour as evoking the 'serene calm of Piero della Francesca's Baptism of Christ' and a space of wonder and dreaming beyond confinement. The title, 'Red', invites viewers to imagine a colour absent from the work. For Awuni, it holds a personal resonance, inspired by his brother's favourite colour and his 'coolness' – the kind of cool 'that makes red blue.
