This bust was likely made in Italy, where Foye worked from 1772. Sir John Lindsay was an officer in the Royal Navy, reaching the rank of Rear-Admiral of the Red in 1787. He was appointed a Knight of the Bath while serving in India and is portrayed by Foye wearing Roman Imperial military dress. Lindsay sailed extensively in the Caribbean, America and East Indies, and during his early service had a liaison with a black woman named Maria Bell. Their illegitimate daughter, Dido Elizabeth Belle, who was born in 1761, was brought up at Kenwood by Lindsay’s uncle William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. Foye’s only other known bust represents the Sir John Lindsay’s brother-in-law, the painter Allan Ramsay.
