This painting was the prototype for a series of paintings. It was arrived at by working with the canvas flat and floating layers of paint over each other. The final layers before reworking various details were pools of black. Depending on the consistency of the black, the dryness of the underlying layers and the water retention of the surface, the paintings would either work or become a complete blackout. The driving force behind the artist’s discovery of these processes was an interest in natural surfaces like rock, lichen, moss and other forms of growth, such as you would find in an open landscape or in a ravine.
