Ralph Allen was appointed postmaster of Bath in 1712, aged only 19. He reformed the British postal system, making it more efficient and more profitable. Allen became wealthy through his work on the post. He invested the money in Bath’s stone quarries. Thanks to the building boom in Georgian Bath, Allen made a second fortune.

He became one of the most influential people in Bath’s history.
