Despite the large scale of this canvas, Hitchens is likely to have painted it outside as was his usual practice. This allowed him to work quickly and spontaneously to capture his immediate experience of the landscape. Back in the studio he would sometimes return to a painting months or even years later to make a few final adjustments before deeming it finished, as was the case with this work. The result is an energetic and vibrant evocation of the effects of a rain cloud moving across the scene.
