Born in Manchester, Emmanuel Levy was the son of Russian immigrants who had settled in the city towards the end of the nineteenth century. Levy studied at the Manchester School of Art, and afterwards at St Martin’s, London, and in Paris. He taught painting and drawing at the University of Manchester, and was also art critic for the ‘Manchester Evening News’ and the ‘City News’. He moved to London in 1963, and lived there until his death. ‘Raiders Overhead’ portrays the artist with his mother and sister, poised together in the hallway of their house, as they listen to the sound of bomber planes overhead. The tense, erect figures of the man and woman contrast strongly with the bowed form of their mother, creating a sense of differing emotions, and the sharp perspective of open doors and dark shadows contributes to an overall sense of unease, compounded by a dramatic use of dark colour and simplified form.
