The boulder was deposited by a glacier and discovered 12 feet below the surface when Sadberge reservoir was being constructed between 1886 and 1889 for the Stockton and Middlesbrough Water Board. It was placed on the village green to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887.
