A full-length portrait of Queen Victoria (Empress of India) wearing robes of state. The painting was commissioned to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee following a States of Guernsey resolution. The Queen gave permission for a portrait of herself wearing state robes, by Heinrich von Angeli in the Royal Collection, to be copied for the purpose. It was received and acknowledged by the States in a letter to the Queen, dated 21st June 1887. Prinsep was born in Calcutta, the son of an Indian civil servant. When the family returned to London Prinsep was tutored by the artist George Frederick Watts, a close family friend. It was Watts who suggested that Valentine should go to Paris to complete his art education under the Swiss artist Charles Gleyre.
