This portrait of Queen Charlotte (1744–1818) was commissioned by the sitter for her Lord Chamberlain. Beechey copied an earlier composition, executed in 1796 to accompany the portrait of Charlotte’s husband George III. The domestic image cultivated by the royal couple is apparent here: the Queen is in contemporary dress and lacks any overt symbols of royal authority or splendour. She is shown carrying a Maltese dog and walking the grounds of Frogmore, her house in the Home Park at Windsor, represented in the distance.
