A quarry and a spire, two significant features of landscape, the latter typically more admired and noticed than the earthwork that was necessary in its creation: both evoke aspects of endeavour that have shaped our world, motivated by perceived needs that have been matched by human effort and imagination.
This painting arises not only from an intimate knowledge of particular landscapes that have been mined and quarried but also from a practical interrogation of practices in art associated with Conceptualism and Minimalism. Here, however, concerns with systems and processes are employed in the service of subject-matter beyond purely formal issues. The physical structure of the painting, slower to make than its apparent simplicity might suggest, is a distillation of form and content that is intended to offer viewers a greater imaginative space for engagement than would be the case if it were more specific in its detail.
