Folding fan, the tortoiseshell sticks applied to a thick vellum leaf stained black and overpainted on the recto with floral festoons and putti busying themselves with various activities within a formal garden setting. Closer observation shows the putti’s naked forms have been subsequently censored – crudely overpainted in blue.

Dating from the second half of the 17th century, the article survives intact and is, therefore, a comparatively rare survival from a time when handheld fans were carried mainly by the nobility and reflected the high status and refined tastes of their possessors. By the start of the 18th century, fans were rather more commonplace and affordable to an ever-broadening social demographic.
