William Marlow trained under Samuel Scott and painted landscape views influenced by Canaletto’s paintings of Venice and London. He had a successful career but, towards the end of his life, turned to other occupations as the diarist, Farington, records after his death:

‘He had long given up painting for an amusement more agreeable to him, the making of telescopes and other articles’
