Sir Deian Rhys Hopkins was, from 2001 until 2009, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of London South Bank University. He is an historian, academic and educationalist, originally from Wales. Hopkin was Head of Aberystwyth University's History Department where he taught for 24 years. In 1991 he moved to the City of London Polytechnic (now London Metropolitan University) before his tenure at South Bank University. Hopkin has received many honours including a Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Society of Arts and is a Freeman of the City of London. Being interviewed in 2009 Hopkin described himself as 'an optimist, I tend to look for the silver lining rather than worry about the clouds'. Mark Roscoe is a London-based artist and portrait painter who has undertaken over 100 commissions.
