Michael Grant, president and vice-chancellor of Queen’s (1959–1966), was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. A fellow of the latter college, he served in the War Office and thereafter acted as the first British Council representative in Turkey. In 1948 he was appointed to the chair of humanity at Edinburgh University and remained in the post until 1959. He also served as first vice-chancellor of the University of Khartoum (1956–1958). In 1961 he received an honorary LittD from Trinity College, Dublin and in 1967, was awarded an honorary LLD by Queen’s. An eminent classical scholar, he has published extensively on aspects of Greek and Roman history and literature, and on Roman coinage. In 1984 he was awarded an honorary fellowship of the Royal Numismatic Society.
