Tom Carr is one of the best known and most popular watercolour painters in the north of Ireland. He attended the Slade (1927–1929) and spent six months in Italy before returning to London, where he lived until the outbreak of the Second World War. During his years in London, he experimented briefly with non-figurative art but later became associated with the Euston Road Group, whose aim was a return to a more realistic conception of art. Born in London on 4th August 1901, Emeleus, son of Karl Henry Emeleus and Ellen Briggs was educated at Hastings Grammar School and Cambridge. In 1927 he was appointed lecturer in physics at Queen’s University. From 1933 to 1966 he was professor of physics at Queen’s and on his retirement in the latter year, was created professor emeritus.
