John Hopkinson had a distinguished career and was approached by the electors to follow James Stuart in the Chair of Mechanism. However, he chose to remain in practice as a consulting engineer and he combined this later with a Professorship of Electrical Engineering at King's College, London. This portrait was painted posthumously from a photograph in 1899.
