Prince Eugene is shown here with the stocco e berrettone (sword and blessed hat) which Pope Clement XI sent him in gratitude for his victory over the Turks. He is wearing the Golden Fleece pendant. The Prince commissioned the Belvedere Palace in Vienna and the architectural drawing may refer to this. The antique reliefs and fragments refer to his antiquarian interests and the book, 'L’Art de la Guerre', to his military prowess.

Although Schuppen did paint Prince Eugene, this portrait is unlikely to be by him. It is now thought probably to be by Jan Kupecky as it closely resembles his other portraits of the Prince.
