Colours (large flags mounted on a pike) were used by the Army as a rallying point for troops and to mark the location of the Commander. Colours may be inscribed with the names of battles or other battle honours. As a symbol of a regiment they are always guarded, and paid compliments. The presentation of new colours is therefore a ceremony of reverence and importance.

The Black Watch carried two colours. The Monarch's Colour is a Union Jack with the Regiment's insignia placed in the centre. The Regimental Colour is a blue flag with the insignia in the centre.
