Daniels’ self portrait is inscribed 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man 1950'. The human form is modelled with rigorous simplicity against an askew brick wall. There is a characteristically shapely line all the way down from his hair to his neck and shoulders. The line running from forehead to high cheekbone to sculpted chin and delicate throat, is no less concise. The slightly upraised eyebrow helps give an impression of someone measuring up the world. The artist achieved a chalky, fresco effect. The palette balances a bold restraint of the form with the muted exuberance of the wall’s variegated pinks and reds. Daniels lives in London. His subjects have included many London scenes – notably his mid-1950s Hammersmith Town Hall mural paintings of boatmen.
