The identity of the subject is unknown; however his portrait is shown hanging at the foot of the stairs in the portrait of Holcombe Ingleby.

This is one of nineteen paintings associated with the Ingleby family of Valentines estate, Ilford, Essex which were donated to Ilford Borough Council in 1957 by Clement Rolfe Ingleby, son of Holcombe Ingleby of Sedgeford Hall, Norfolk. It now forms part of the collections of Redbridge Museum.
