The sitters are unknown but it has been speculated that they may be related to Shakespeare. Perhaps the painting shows Susanna Shakespeare and her husband John Hall, or Shakespeare's granddaughter Elizabeth with her husband Thomas Nash? It could well be a marriage portrait or a 'presentation' portrait that shows off a young girl to potential suitors.
