The sitter was previously thought to be Sir John Barnard (1605–1674) but the style of wig worn by the subject suggests the portrait was painted about 1690, 16 years or so after Sir John Barnard's death.

This portrait and that previously thought to show Elizabeth Barnard (STRST : SBT 1994-19/105) were in Thomas Hart's possession. Thomas Hart was a descendent of Shakespeare's sister, Joan Hart. The two portraits were in Shakespeare's Birthplace from 1793 until 1820 when Mrs Hornby lived there. They were removed by her when she left in 1820.
