This three-quarter-length portrait depicts an unknown gentleman with shoulder-length hair, parted in the middle. He is dressed in a dark Japanese-style gown and is resting his left arm on a parapet with a view of classical buildings behind him.

The portrait was previously believed to be the work of Gaspar Netscher but is now attributed to Michiel Van Musscher. Three-quarter-length portraits painted on small canvases are much more van Musscher's style, as is the background and pose. The hairstyle would seem to date it to c.1670 but this may be a personal fad of the sitter as the Japanese-style gown suggests a slightly later date. By the 1670s van Musscher was almost exclusively painting portraits of sitters in their own environment, surrounded by their everyday attributes.
