A three-quarter length study of a gentleman in middle age. He is standing facing left, and leans on a large book of landscape drawings, turning the pages with his left hand. He is bald on top, with collar-length hair at the sides and back, and he has a moustache and a goatee beard. He is dressed in a long dark frock coat, a white shirt with folded back cuffs, and cufflinks.

The sitter is unknown, but probably from the family of Tom Allom (1804–1872). Possibly the person depicted is Thomas James Rawlins, brother of Tom Allom's widow.
