The portrait shows an artist who has paused while drawing. His porte-crayon is on the table to the right on top of two sheets of grey paper, on one of which is an image of the little anatomical figure which he is using to study the musculature of the body. The écorché is a reduced cast of the figure which Dr William Hunter made c.1750 for the St Martin's Lane Academy, and which was taken to the premises of the Royal Academy when it was founded in 1768. This suggests that the man was a student of the Royal Academy, or closely connected with it, in its early years. Martin Postle has proposed that the painting is a self portrait by a pupil of Joshua Reynolds, William Doughty (1757–1782).
