It is thought that this portrait shows one of the sons of James Montagu (1608–1665) and Mary Baynard (1621–1685). The Montagu family owned Lackham in Wiltshire for six generations, from 1623 to 1823.

This is one of only three known portraits of the Lackham Montagu branch.
