The artist, elder brother of the renowned Hans Holbein, died very young. This was one of his last works. We do not know the name of the sitter, and the monogram on his beret has not been deciphered, but his costume and weaponry suggest that he was of high rank. The strong influence of Italian Renaissance portraits can be felt here, yet there is characteristic north European attention to the individual traits of the sitter's appearance. The unusual fragmentary architectural background contrasts with the treatment of the face and clothes, as a result of which the artist created the image of a calm and composed man of integrity.
