La Thangue's style was influenced by the Barbizon school of open-air landscape painters and he often painted rustic genre scenes, with his characteristic square-brush technique. During the 1880s pictures of rural life were very popular due to the industrialisation which was sweeping the country and the desire to record the customs and traditions of the countryside which were in danger of dying out. La Thangue's paintings focused on peasants and workers carrying out their daily tasks.

This portrait is thought to be a finished study for 'The Return of the Reapers' of 1886, which is in the Tate collection.
