The portrait, probably Continental and dating from the 1620s, is perhaps that of a young prince, as indicated by the jewelled motif which he wears in his hat. He holds a coral teething rattle (such objects were considered talismans) and has a pomander hanging from his belt, as protection against infection and evil vapours.
