Although entitled by the artist 'Portrait of a Woman', the sitter was probably the actress Valerie Taylor (1902–1988), to whom Daintrey was briefly engaged in 1927. The inscription suggests, however, that it is no more than a head study. It dates from the year Daintrey was appointed art master at the Dean Close School, Cheltenham.
