The subject is portrayed in the conservative Spanish-style dress worn by the nobility of Genoa in the seventeenth century. The picture was long thought to be by Van Dyck. However, it lacks Van Dyck’s elegant spontaneity, and elements such as the hands and glove are too crudely painted to be by him. Works such as Carbone’s 'Young Lady on a Terrace' (Genoa, Palazzo Bianco) reveal the same treatment of drapery and hands as in The Wallace Collection’s picture, together with the same distinctive handling of landscape, justifying an attribution of this picture to Carbone.
