This type of profile portrait became popular again during the Renaissance with the re-examination of antiquities and an appreciation for profile portraits such as those found on Roman coins. Also, one of the great Humanist patrons, Federigo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, had an eye taken out in a wild boar hunting accident and was thereafter depicted in profile, strengthening the fashion further.
