Very little is known about this painting. Contrary to its inscription, this is neither a portrait of Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564) nor an original by Calcar. The inscription is modern; certainly not earlier than the late eighteenth century and repainted since then. The sitter is tall and slim compared with the short, thickset depiction of Vesalius shown in Calcar’s 1542 woodcut. This sitter also appears in a portrait belonging to the Académie de Médicine of Paris.
