We do not know who the lady is in this painting. Portraits of this period often used symbols that viewers would have easily understood. Here, the small dog represents fidelity and shows that the lady is a faithful wife.

Mignard was a prolific and well-known portrait artist in the seventeenth century. He painted portraits of King Louis XIV and the French royal court and his Italian patrons included cardinals and popes.

The word ‘school’ in seventeenth-century art usually means the studio of a well-known artist where aspiring painters learned their craft.
