Mignard was a prolific and well-known portrait artist in the seventeenth century. He painted portraits of King Louis XIV and the French royal court and his Italian patrons included cardinals and popes.
The word ‘school’ in seventeenth-century art usually means the studio of a well-known artist where aspiring painters learned their craft.
