This is a half-length copy of a full-length picture in the collection of the Dukes of Devonshire at Chatsworth, which became celebrated in the early eighteenth century as a portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots by the Italian artist Federico Zuccaro, who is known to have visited England in 1575. Known as the 'Carleton' type of representation of Mary, after the first known owner of the original, it has been reproduced often in painting and in prints.
