Not a lot is known about this image. Writing on the back suggests it was painted in 1568, though it has been thought that it was painted in the nineteenth century with the sitter in peasant’s costume. It has also been suggested that this work is related to the artist Lucas de Heere, from Ghent, possibly painted by one of his pupils during his time in England between 1567 and 1576.
