Anne Stuart was married to her relative Robert Stuart, Lord d'Aubigny, Maréchal of France, and was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Eleanor. Her portrait has been dated to the period 1533 to 1536 and is one of a series by Claude Corneille de Lyon and his workshop, which was produced when Corneille was painter to the Queen. A drawing depicts the same sitter as a widow several years later, and must have been made shortly after her husband's death in 1543 or 1544. Although the inscription on the Bristol version is very old, it is probably a later addition.
