The work has been attributed to either a follower of the Flemish Baroque artist Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599–1641), or Scotland’s first eminent portrait painter, George Jameson (c.1587–1644). Using similarities to known works by these artists for comparison, George Jameson’s style best matches, but does not exclude another artist as the painter of this puzzling picture.
