The artist, Francis Cotes, was a master of pastels and not as accomplished as an oil painter. Despite this Cotes made a comfortable living from oil portraiture, particularly in the 1760s (when it is thought this portrait dates) as British society was prospering from the spoils of the newly-won Empire. Cotes benefited from the growing number of rich clients intent on expressing their sense of dignity in large, formal and imposing oil portraits. There is a companion picture called 'A Gentleman' currently held in the Leger Galleries, London.
