A full length frontal portrait of a blonde boy, about two or three years old, in a grey dress with a white collar, cuffs, bodice and apron, and a gold cap. A small red leather shoe peeps out below his skirts. He has a gold chain about his waist and a sash across his chest, which is secured at his shoulder with a blue ribbon bow. At the end of the chain is a rinkelbel, a kind of rattle, which he holds in his outstretched right hand. It appears to be a teether of smooth grey translucent crystal in a gold setting, with small round dangling gold bells around the handle. He holds a bunch of black grapes in his left hand. He is turned slightly to the left towards a dog sitting at his feet in the bottom left corner. The dog, which has some attributes of a spaniel, looks away to the left, a collar around its neck with a bell attached.
