In the foreground is a man ploughing a field with a horse drawn plough. He wears a soft brown hat, a white shirt with rolled up sleeves, a waistcoat with a red neckerchief, fawn breeches, blue stockings and short boots. He has his back to the viewer. The bay horse is stopping at the end of the furrow. Behind and around the plough are seagulls and crows with more perched on the fence. Beyond is pasture land and a glimpse of a beach with the sea, white cliffs and a pattern of fields on the cliff tops. It is a bright sunny day.
