The artist has interwoven a number of her ideas about the coal mining industry into this powerful picture. "The miners are symbols of the Trade Union movement, the props of the working class, support for the young, the old, the infirm and the workers themselves whether employed or not. The figure on the right in red line represents youth, on whose shoulders the burden falls when the system is crushed by 'union bashing' activity, as in the Thatcher/McGregor years.
