Peter Scott was a pioneering conservationist and ornithologist, who was knighted in 1973 for his services to conservation. He was Nature in Art’s first president and is one of the UK’s best-known wildlife artists. He was also an author, naturalist, sailor, scuba diver and gliding champion. He trained as a biologist at Cambridge and then as a painter at Munich State Academy and the Royal Academy schools (1934–1936). He continued to paint and exhibit before joining the Navy in the Second World War. After the war he set the Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge and then started the Worldwide Wildlife Fund in 1961. He was the first president of the Society of Wildlife Artists. This painting of pintail – one of Sir Peter’s favourite birds – was first exhibited at the SWLA show at the Mall Galleries in 1987 and, though instantly recognisable as one of his paintings, has a style subtly different to his earlier works.
