Christopher Columbus brought the first pineapples from South America to Europe in 1490s. It was another 220 years before the first plant produced fruit in England. They need heated houses called ‘pineries’ to thrive in the much colder climate.

Prized for their sweetness and rarity, pineapples became the ultimate symbol of status and wealth. The fruits were so expensive people would rent them to display at dinner parties.
