Philip Pullman's books include the best to selling trilogy 'His Dark Materials'. The third instalment, 'The Amber Spyglass', is the only book for young people to win Whitbread Book of the Year in 2001 and to be longlisted for the Booker Prize. The trilogy has been adapted into a play and a part has been filmed. He began his career in the 1970s as a teacher and writing school plays. Pullman's first published work was 'The Haunted Storm', which jointly won the New English Library's Young Writer's Award in 1972. He stopped teaching and concentrated full time on writing in the mid-1980s. Pullman is also Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society.
