Philip IV of Spain (1605–1665) is depicted wearing the order of the Golden Fleece, associated with chivalry. He was a keen patron of the arts, and supported the work of Velázquez who subsequently made the king and his family the subject of many works. Velázquez painted the king throughout his life, depicting the young Philip in 1623, two years after ascending the throne in 1621, at the age of just 16. The painting in this collection shows a more mature Philip, following his long engagement in the Thirty Years War (1618–1648).
