This photograph is from Maud Sulter's 'Zabat' series which includes nine images of creative women each appearing as one of the nine Greek muses. The series was commissioned by Rochdale Art Gallery in 1989 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the invention of photography. Maud Sulter deploys all the conventional motifs of photography – such as the white backdrop, props and elaborate gold frame – to address the medium and black women's almost invisibility in its history. This image is of the feminist activist and author Alice Walker who is represented as the muse of comedy and the bringer of flowers, Phalia.
