Peter Buchan was one of the earliest collectors of ballads in north-east Scotland; an engraving based on this painting formed the frontispiece to Buchan's 'Ancient Ballads and Songs of the North of Scotland' (1828). He established the first printing press in Peterhead in 1816 and published several collections of verse and ballads, as well as historical tales and romances.
