Gilbert Spencer, the brother of Stanley Spencer, attended the Camberwell School of Arts and later the Slade School of Fine Arts. After the First World War he made his name for his landscapes, mainly painted in the South of England. This early painting from 1921 shows a view of Pegwell Bay, looking down from the high dunes. The viewpoint raises the horizon and gives an outlook across the bay, which dominates this tranquil composition.
